DJ Cleo taking a break from music for...football?!
Renowned music producer and DJ Cleo, whose real name is Cleopas
Monyepao, during a recent interview on Power FM confirmed that he
is putting his music career on hold to become a professional
footballer.
Speaking to Thabiso Tema, Monyepao said he has always dreamed
about being a professional football player and has played before,
progressing as far as under-15 Kaizer Chiefs.
He had to take a break from playing when he suffered some injuries,
though, and during this time started getting involved in the music
business he'd later prove to be so good at.
Monyepao also discussed the touchy fact that he is embarking on
his soccer dream at the age of 34, but said that goalkeepers are
generally much older than the rest of the players in a football team.
"Keepers can go till 40," he said.
The award-winning producer furthermore insisted that he didn't
make the decision lightly, and took four months to finally decide "no
more music, football", and that the rampant scepticism of those
around him only makes him more determined to succeed.
"I'm very driven," Monyepao told the radio presenter.
"98.7 percent of everyone I've told that I want to play soccer, they
laughed at me. One of the Sunday papers this weekend actually
ridiculed me. It's such things that get me going.
"All my struggles in the music industry made me realised that, once
I started succeeding, I then realise I'm driven, and if you persevere,
nothing will stop you from achieving what you want.
"The message is, 'You can do it'. If you can dream it, you can live
it."
The DJ-turned-goalkeeper is currently training with BidVest United,
with whom he hopes to secure a contract.
