The Senate at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) has finally chosen an acting Vice Chancellor for the institution.
Professor Anthony Elujoba of the Faculty of Pharmacy has emerged the acting Vice-Chancellor following a meeting between members of the university senate on Thursday, July 21, 2016.
This came barely 24 hours after the Federal Government ordered the Senate of the school to use its internal mechanism in selecting a new Vice Chancellor.
It will be recalled that the Academic Staff Union of the institution had earlier disagreed with the Senior Staff Association of Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) over the appointment of Prof. Ayobami Salami, who is currently the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics) as the 11th VC of the university.
In a letter addressed to the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, the President earlier directed the Senate not to consider any of the candidates who earlier contested for the position.
The letter further says the Senate of the university should take immediate steps to implement the directive of the President and report back to the Federal Ministry of Education.

No fewer than 37 military personnel escaped death at Gaya 65km south of Kano Friday morning when their convoy crashed into a ditch.
Eyewitness, Sule Adamu told Vanguard that the incident occured along Gaya–Jahun federal highway at about 7.30 am when the convoy tried to make a u-turn when they realised they had missed their way.
Adamu said that “at the moment most of them are in critical conditions at Gaya General hospital, and there are visible cases of fractures among the wounded personnel”.

Two Chimpanzees escape from cage at Jos Zoo, one caught, the other still on the run (photo)

Two male Chimpanzees escaped from their cage yesterday, July 12 at the National Museum and Monument complex in Jos, Plateau State.One of them has since been caught and safely returned to its cage while the other fled the zoo premises and is presently hiding on a tree around in a residential area. According to Plateau News Online, the fleeing Chimpanzee may likely get shot tomorrow.

"In the early hours of yesterday morning, two chimpanzees escaped from their cage and were harassing passersby at the premises of the Jos National Museum and Monuments. One of the chimps was successfully lured back into its cage while the other escaped running out of the Zoo premises and perching on a tree in a residential area located at west of mines neighborhood not far from the zoo premises. All efforts by the men of the Plateau State Fire Service to capture it alive proof abortive. After 8 hours of trying, one of the firemen climbed the tree and cut down the branch the Chimp was hanging on making it to fall then running into the grove close to the zoo. As at the time of this report, the Chimpanzee was nowhere to be found after disappearing into the thick bushes. A reliable source informed our reporter that the Chimpanzee may likely get shot tomorrow if sighted"

Whats up with different form of strikes all over tertiary institutions. So workers of the Jos University Teaching Hospital yesterday began a sit-at-work strike to protest the non payment of their June salaries.
The workers came to work but just sat down and did not resume duties as expected. They signed the attendance register, but were not attending to patients.
They are protesting that out of 2094 workers, only 394 members of staff were paid.

We hope something will be done very soon, because this might cause so many lost of lives which could be prevented.

Mathew waved the earth goodbye shortly after playing football with his friends.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Ibadan chapter, has said that the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) is acting beyond its powers when it released the admission guidelines for Nigerian universities.
ASUU chairman at the university, Dr. Deji Omole, said that only the Senate in Nigerian Universities can create admission modalities and determine which suits their institution.
Reacting to the 2016 admission guidelines recently released by JAMB, Omole said that Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, and JAMB Registrar, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, are confused and inconsistent. The reason being that, at first a decision was made to ban the collection of payment through the conduction of Post-UTME, but these new guidelines involve a structure which requires payment of screening fees that is designed favour the children of the rich against the poor.
